Three-card spread
Three cards in a row, for past, present and future, lay your situation out in time: where it came from, where you stand now and where it’s heading. Three cards are enough to tell a story, and few enough that you can keep the whole of it in view.
The future here is a direction. The third card shows where things lean if nothing changes. Once you can see that, you can decide whether you want to go there, and what you’d do differently if you don’t.
The cards fall at random: this shows the layout, it is not a reading.
Positions
Past
What led to the situation as it is now: events, choices, habits or feelings that still echo in it. It can be a long story or last week. The card shows what the present is built on, and often points to something it’s time to let go of, or something worth carrying forward.
Present
Where you are now: the main theme, the state of things, the question being settled at this moment. It’s the centre of the spread, and the other two cards hang from it. If the card here surprises you, look closer; it may show something you already feel but haven’t put into words.
Future
Where the situation leans if you carry on as you are. The card shows the likely next turn, and your choices can change it. A hard card here is a prompt to consider what to do differently; an easy one tells you what to build on.
When this spread fits
Use this spread when the situation has a history: a relationship that’s shifting, something brewing at work, a decision you’ve been circling for months. It helps you see which parts of the past still shape the present, and where your current course leads. For quick advice for the day, one card is enough; when many people and sides are involved, the Celtic Cross gives you more room.
How to ask
Ask about the situation as a whole and your place in it: “What’s going on between me and…”, “Where is my project heading?”. Keep to one question on one subject, or the past will come from one story and the future from another. The third card shows a tendency, so ask about direction: “Where is this going?”, “What is this turning into?”. The bot’s reading is shaped by your question, so name the situation plainly; that makes it easier to tie the three cards to your case.
Questions that work
- What do I need to know about my relationship?
- How is my situation at work developing, and which part of it is up to me?
- Why do I keep putting off my own project?
- Where is my current approach to my studies taking me?
- What has changed in my friendship with my sister, and where is it going?
Questions that work poorly
- What will my life be like in a year? Tarot doesn’t name timeframes, and “my life” is too wide for three positions.
- Will I win the court case? Tarot makes no legal forecasts.
- What does my ex think of me? The cards show your side of the story and what in it is up to you.
- What’s next for my job and my love life? Two subjects in one question blur the positions.
Reading the positions together
Read the cards as a story in three frames. Take each one in its position first, then look at them together: what changed between the first card and the second, and how does the second lead into the third? If the past and the future look alike, the story may be going round in circles. If they’re very different, a turn is probably being decided in the present.
Compare the suits. If two or three cards share a suit, the whole story is playing out in one area of life. If the suit changes from card to card, so does the theme: something that began as a feeling may, by the third card, have become a matter of decision or of practical work.
If the future card worries you, look to the present card: of the three, it’s the only one about what’s happening now and what you can do today. The question to ask yourself on that card’s page makes a good first step.
In the bot you ask your own question, the cards fall into these positions, and the reading takes your question into account.
