What the card shows

In the middle of the sea, on a broad slab, stands the king’s stone throne, with green and blue waves rolling all around. The king holds a large golden cup in his right hand and a short sceptre in his left. He wears a crown, a blue robe and a green cloak with a red collar, and a fish-shaped pendant hangs on his chest. On the left a fish leaps from the water; on the right a ship sails under red canvas. His face is calm and his feet rest firmly on the stone, though there is water everywhere.

Upright

A calm person in a storm: that’s the King of Cups. He governs feeling so that it serves the work and the people around him. He may be a leader, a doctor, a teacher, a mediator, a parent people come to for advice, or your own ability to stay level when everything around you is choppy. He feels compassion without drowning in it, says hard things gently, and settles conflicts without humiliating anyone.

His throne stands in the middle of the sea, on stone, so the king stays dry and composed with water all around. A ship sails on one side and a fish leaps on the other: two sides of his maturity, the skill to steer practical affairs and the capacity to stay alive and feeling. Acknowledge your emotions without handing them the decision. Feel the anger, worry or hurt fully, name it, then decide what would be wise.

Keywords: emotional maturity, composure, diplomacy, compassion, wise leadership

Reversed

Reversed, the King of Cups buries his feelings so deep he forgets they’re there. Outwardly calm, inwardly he’s been in a storm for a while: irritation builds, tiredness goes unadmitted, and the people close to him don’t know how he really is. That kind of composure can end in an outburst or in coldness. Calm can survive a conversation about feelings, while suppression avoids one at any cost, which is how you tell them apart.

A gift for reading other people’s feelings can be turned against them: stirring up guilt, playing on pity, promising support and exploiting trust. Concern can be a mask for calculation. If the card points to someone else, notice how you feel after talking to them. If it points to you, admit honestly where you sway people through their emotions.

Keywords: suppressed feelings, coldness, manipulation, guilt-tripping, false concern

King of Cups in relationships

In love the King of Cups brings mature, dependable feeling: a partner who is easy to be calm with, who listens and doesn’t stir up storms. It can also describe your own ability to raise hard subjects without blame. Say what you feel directly and kindly, and make decisions with a cool head. Reversed, this becomes emotional unavailability, silences where resentment piles up, and relationships where someone plays on feelings.

King of Cups at work

In the workplace the King of Cups is the leader who keeps a team steady: who listens, settles conflict, and delivers unwelcome news so that nobody loses face. That may be your role, or a person worth leaning on. Reversed, he becomes the manager who rules by guilt, or your own habit of swallowing irritation until it bursts out. In a tense situation, acknowledge everyone’s emotions first and move on to solutions after.

King of Cups as advice for the day

If something stings today, don’t reply straight away. Name the feeling to yourself in one word, wait at least ten minutes, then decide what you want to say and why. There’s no need to hide the feeling; you can voice it calmly, in the first person, without accusations. Ten quiet minutes often save a day of explanations.
