What the card shows
The king sits on a black throne with bulls’ heads carved at the corners of its back and another bull on its side. His robe is so thickly covered in grapevines and bunches of grapes that he almost merges with the garden around him. His crown is wound with red flowers and leaves, and a red hood lies on his shoulders. In his right hand he holds a gold sceptre topped with an orb; his left rests easily on a pentacle by his knee. An armoured foot shows beneath the robe. Behind him are a wall and a castle with towers, under a yellow sky. Waite asked readers to note the bull recurring on the throne, and admitted that this suit is not especially about “questions of money”.
Upright
The King of Pentacles builds things that keep working for years: a business, a household where everything is accounted for, a team where people feel secure. Kings apply their suit’s quality in the outside world, and this one turns resources into a lasting system through enterprise and common sense. He can be a mature person who counts, plans far ahead and answers for the result, or a sign that it’s your turn to take that seat.
The bull on the throne is strength in no hurry, the kind that pulls a plough all day without tiring. A leader like this doesn’t dash about; he moves when it’s needed, and the security he provides is made of many calm decisions. Manage your resources, whether time, strength, money or people, as if they were an orchard meant to bear fruit for many years.
Keywords: steady leadership, enterprise, stability, responsibility, long-term thinking
Reversed
Reversed, the King of Pentacles grips the sceptre too hard. Rigid control looks like a rule for everything: every expense signed off, every decision approved personally, every experiment banned because it’s a risk. Under that kind of management everything is preserved and nothing grows; people stop making suggestions and the garden runs wild. Separate the decisions where your control matters from those where trust is enough.
Anxiety about security is the other reading. There may be enough resources, but the feeling of safety is missing: the person keeps counting, comparing, fearing for their position, and even success brings no peace. It can look like work without rest, or a habit of measuring everyone, yourself included, by what they’re “worth”. The King sits calmly in the middle of his garden. What would you need in order to sit like that?
Keywords: rigid control, security anxiety, fear of losing status, micromanagement, no rest
King of Pentacles in relationships
Between two people the King of Pentacles is someone you can rely on: he keeps his word, thinks ahead, and shows feeling by looking after the life you share. Such a relationship has clarity, plans and a home in common. Reversed, he controls every step and every purchase, and love starts being measured in gifts and status. Discuss practical matters calmly and together, without leaving them all to one person.
King of Pentacles at work
At work the King of Pentacles is a manager or expert who builds for the long term: setting up processes, allocating resources, answering for decisions and their consequences. Act like an owner: think about how the work will hold up over years, look after people, decide on facts. Reversed, it means micromanagement, fear of risk and success measured by numbers alone. Ask which of your current decisions will still make sense in five years.
King of Pentacles as advice for the day
Think of a resource you’re responsible for, whether your time, a team’s strength, a shared reserve or your own body. Make one decision that will leave it sturdier a year from now: a routine, a rule, a task delegated, something dropped. And wherever you feel the urge to control every detail, leave a little room.
The card’s lesson
The King of Pentacles manages resources responsibly and for the long term.
