What the card shows
A well-dressed man stands between two beggars kneeling at his feet. He wears a red cloak over a blue-and-white striped tunic, a red sash and a red turban with a scarf. In his left hand he holds a pair of scales, the pans perfectly level. With his right he lets coins fall into the cupped hands of a man in a yellow cloak. The other, in a grey-blue cloak with a patch, reaches up and waits. Six gold pentacles hang in the pale sky, and a town’s towers show on the right. The merchant looks down at the one he is giving to.
Upright
Mentoring, volunteering, supporting a relative, the colleague who covered for you in a bad week: the Six of Pentacles is about resources moving between people. You may stand on either side, giving or receiving knowledge, time, contacts or things. Coming straight after the Five’s snowstorm, it shows the people who were freezing being helped. Accepting help is part of the exchange too, and no defeat.
The scales in the giver’s hand hang level. He isn’t handing things out at random; he measures what he can give without ruining himself and what the person asking really needs. That is clear-eyed generosity, with room for someone else’s need and for your own limits. Help in a way that won’t leave you needing rescue afterwards, and accept help without giving up your dignity. Over a lifetime the roles keep changing.
Keywords: generosity, mutual help, fair exchange, mentoring, giving with care
Reversed
The scales tip. One person always gives, the other always takes, and neither remembers it being any other way. In the picture the second beggar kneels and waits while the coins fall into someone else’s hands. Sharing turns unfair in a family, a team or a group of friends, and envy grows out of it. Envy is better named than hidden.
The giver towers over the people on their knees, and a difference in height easily becomes power: “I helped you, so you owe me.” Support like that keeps someone dependent, and gratitude hardens into a debt that can never be repaid. It can run the other way as well, when you accept help knowing you’ll pay for it in obedience. What are you really paying for when you give or receive?
Keywords: unequal exchange, strings attached, dependence, envy, debts of gratitude
Six of Pentacles in relationships
In love the Six of Pentacles is about the balance of care: who listens, who supports, who gives way more often. In a healthy couple the anchor changes from week to week. Reversed, love turns into a trade in favours or a quiet way of keeping someone dependent. Check whether you’ve been stuck too long as the rescuer, or as the one always rescued.
Six of Pentacles at work
At work the Six is mentoring, shared knowledge, and a fair split of tasks and credit. You may be the one helping newcomers, or the one who needs an experienced colleague’s advice; both roles are useful. Is the workload fairly shared, and can people see who contributes what? Reversed, it points to favouritism and help that comes with an expectation of loyalty beyond the deal.
Six of Pentacles as advice for the day
Take one exchange in your life, with a partner, a friend or at work, and weigh it honestly: who gives how much? If you’ve only been giving for months, ask for something specific. If you’ve only been taking, give a little back: thanks in words, help in deeds, an hour of your time.
The card’s lesson
