What the card shows
Four tall wands are planted across the foreground like the poles of a canopy. A heavy garland of greenery, red roses and orange fruit hangs between them, with red ribbons tied around the outer two. Just beyond this gateway two women in long robes, one in white with a blue drape, the other in dark red, lift bouquets above their heads; both wear wreaths. Behind them rise grey castle walls and a round tower with a pointed red roof. A small crowd has gathered by the wall on the left, and on the right a bridge arches over a moat. Over it all hangs a bright yellow sky, as if the party were lit from inside.
Upright
Four is the number of things that stand: four corners to a house, four legs to a table. In Wands, a suit that’s usually on the move, it marks a rare and happy pause. Maybe it’s a milestone you’ve finally reached: a housewarming, a wedding, a degree, the end of a renovation, a launch that took ages. The suit’s fire doesn’t push you onward here; it warms. What’s done deserves celebrating before you rush off again.
The wands stand before a gate, and people are coming out through it to meet you. This celebration is shared by those who built it with you and those who are simply glad for you. The Four of Wands speaks of your circle’s support and a place where you’re welcome. Gather people, say thank you, and let yourself feel it: you’re home.
Keywords: celebration, milestone, a sense of home, community, harmony
Reversed
The garland is up and the guests have arrived, yet something is off. The party is staged for other people’s eyes, the talk at the table is strained, and the joy has to be performed. An event that should feel good by every sign, such as a wedding, a move or an anniversary, leaves you empty or uneasy instead. Sometimes a milestone is celebrated before it’s truly passed, and the poles under the garland still wobble.
Home can be missing quite literally: a move, temporary housing, a place you can’t settle into. Or more quietly, when among family you feel like a guest and on the team like an outsider. There’s no need to change everything at once. Notice where your real garlanded gate is, with which people and in which places you don’t have to pretend.
Keywords: shaky celebration, not feeling at home, joy for show, outsider, unsteady ground
Four of Wands in relationships
Engagements, weddings, moving in together, meeting the family, a first shared home: the Four of Wands is one of the warmest cards a couple can draw, and its four poles and garland look very like a wedding arch. Reversed, everything may look ready for the party while neither of you quite feels at home with the other. Take time to celebrate what you’ve already built before discussing what’s missing.
Four of Wands at work
A finished stage: the project delivered, the review passed, the team finally clicking. Reversed, look at the structure underneath, at processes held together by goodwill and a cheerful report hiding unsolved problems. If the work really is done, stop and celebrate with everyone who put in the effort; a short shared pause bonds people better than another meeting.
Four of Wands as advice for the day
Think of a milestone you passed recently and never marked, because there wasn’t time or it felt too early. Mark it today, even modestly: dinner with people you love, a call to whoever helped, flowers on the table. Invite at least one person and say out loud what you’re celebrating.
The card’s lesson
