Judgement
Major Arcana XX
In short
- Upright
- Awakening, honest assessment, and a call to change.
- Reversed
- Harsh self-judgement or ignoring a needed wake-up call.
What the card shows
An angel with pinkish-red wings and golden curls leans out of grey clouds, blowing a gold trumpet hung with a white banner and a red cross. Below, open coffins stand on the water, and grey, naked people rise from them. In front, a man stands with his back to us, a woman with long fair hair spreads her arms wide, and between them a child, also seen from behind, lifts both hands. Further back, three more figures reach toward the sky, and snowy mountains gleam beyond. Every figure turns toward the sound in a single movement.
Upright
The trumpet sounds, and putting things off is no longer possible. An inner call makes itself heard: suddenly it’s clear what you want to do, who you want to be with, what has to change. It often comes after a long period of living at half strength. The people on the card rose as soon as they heard, as if the sound came from inside them.
The name sounds ominous, yet this court doesn’t punish. It’s an honest reassessment of the past: looking back at what you’ve lived, admitting mistakes, forgiving yourself and others, and carrying on with a clearer sense of why. The card is linked with second chances, a return to an abandoned project, a person or a dream with new understanding. The coffins are empty; the past doesn’t hold those who have stood up.
Keywords: inner call, awakening, second chance, forgiveness, honest review
Reversed
Reassessment turns into a verdict against yourself, into harsh self-judgement: going over old mistakes again and again, refusing yourself a fresh start because you “don’t deserve it”, hearing every criticism as proof of the worst. A court like that frees nobody. Ask what you’d say to a close friend in your place, and try saying it to yourself.
Covering your ears is the opposite failure: the trumpet sounds and you pretend not to hear. The signs that it’s time to change are already there, such as weariness with the familiar, the same conflicts on repeat, a thought that returns every night. Answering is frightening, so it’s easier to act as though there’s no sound, and the decision slips again. A call that’s ignored usually grows louder.
Keywords: self-judgement, ignored wake-up call, fear of change, old scores, hesitation
Judgement in relationships
A former partner reappears, an old hurt is finally talked through, a couple decides to start again on new terms: Judgement in a love reading is often about return and review. An honest look at the relationship’s past shows what shouldn’t be repeated, and it isn’t a hunt for someone to blame. Reversed, it warns against endlessly settling old scores. Forgiveness here means deciding to stop holding the debt, even while the hurt is still there.
Judgement at work
At work, Judgement describes a moment of reassessment: reviewing how a project went, taking an honest look at your career, asking why you do what you do. Reversed, it speaks of self-criticism so harsh it stops you moving, or an offer you keep turning down out of fear of change. Sometimes the call leads to a new field or back to work you once put aside. Start with an honest review of what worked, what didn’t and what you learned.
Judgement as advice for the day
Write three lines about an old mistake you still hold against yourself: what happened, what it taught you, what you do differently now. Then close the notebook. If something has been calling you for a while, like a person to write to or a project to pick up again, take one small step toward it today.
The card’s lesson
Judgement is a reassessment of the past for the sake of a more conscious way forward.
A question for yourself
What are you ready to admit and leave behind?

- Major life themes and turning points.
Judgement, number XX, is the second to last step. Having passed through the Moon’s uncertainty and the Sun’s clear day, the Fool weighs for the first time the whole road behind him, and everything he has lived rises to meet the trumpet. Only the World (XXI) remains after it: completion and wholeness.
