The Sun

Major Arcana XIX

Card position

In short

Upright
Joy, confidence, and a clear moment of growth.
Reversed
Dimmed optimism or difficulty accepting success.

What the card shows

A great sun with a human face looks straight out at us, its rays alternating straight and wavy. Below it, sunflowers bloom behind a grey stone wall. In front of the wall a naked child rides a white horse with no saddle or reins, arms flung wide. The horse is pale grey with a dark mane and a lowered head. The child wears a wreath of flowers and a red feather. Beside them streams a huge orange-red banner, and the sky is a clear, even blue.

Upright

No card in the deck is more open than the Sun: nothing hidden in shadow, nothing behind anyone’s back. This card brings joy without small print, clarity after a long fog, and success that you and others can both see, such as a project launched, a reconciliation, or something long imagined finally taking shape. In days like these there’s enough strength for the work and for the people around you.

Look at the child: riding without saddle or reins, arms spread wide, holding on to nothing. The Sun invites you to trust life that simply, to be glad without waiting for permission, show a success without apologising for it, and share the warmth around. That is the card’s vitality, the wish to live and not merely get by. In that mood it’s easier to start what you never quite dared before.

Keywords: joy, success, clarity, vitality, confidence

Reversed

Even upside down, the Sun doesn’t go out; it shines as if through cloud. Joy dims: everything is fine on paper and nothing feels good, the wins seem accidental, the days fill up with tasks and leave no room for pleasure. Sometimes it’s tiredness, sometimes a habit of looking only at what’s unfinished. The sun is still there; you’ve just stopped looking up.

Difficulty accepting success is the second shadow. Praise feels awkward, and every achievement is discounted on the spot: “I got lucky”, “anyone could have done it”, “it doesn’t really count yet”. The good is still there, shining more weakly because you give it no room. Next time someone praises you, try answering with a plain “thank you” and nothing after it.

Keywords: dimmed optimism, discounting success, tiredness, false modesty, sun behind cloud

The Sun in relationships

Warmth and openness: under the Sun a relationship has nothing to hide, and there’s ease, shared laughter, the pleasure of being together in daylight as well as in private. For a couple it’s a good moment for shared plans and for meeting each other’s people. If the card is reversed, the joy may have faded under routine, and one carefree day together can bring it back. A new connection under the Sun tends to be honest and uncomplicated.

The Sun at work

At work, the Sun points to visible results: a project launched, a team that has clicked, a contribution people have noticed. It’s a good time to show what you’ve done, present it, take a role people can see, and celebrate with those who helped. Reversed, it points to a habit of discounting your own achievements, or tiredness so deep that even good luck brings no pleasure; start with a short rest.

The Sun as advice for the day

Get out into the light today, literally: at least fifteen minutes outside in daylight, face to the sky. Recall an achievement from the past few weeks that you let slip by, and tell someone about it without playing it down. Do something purely for pleasure, with no purpose and nothing to report. Joy doesn’t always arrive on cue, and there’s no need to force it.

The card’s lesson

The Sun is linked with clarity, vitality and openness.

A question for yourself

Which small success are you underrating?

Place on the Fool’s journey

Major Arcana
Major life themes and turning points.

On the nineteenth card the Moon’s reflected light gives way to direct light, an anxious night to a clear day. The Fool, who set out as a young man with a white rose, becomes a child again here, simple after all he has been through, his old naivety gone. The red feather in the child’s hair repeats the Fool’s. Only Judgement (XX) and the World (XXI) remain: after the Sun, the road turns to taking stock.
