What the card shows
The king sits on his throne in profile, facing left, holding a tall wand with young shoots, its foot planted on the dais. The points of his crown are shaped like flames, and beneath the crown he wears a red cap. His robe is red-orange, his short green cape has a jagged collar and a gold chain, and over it falls a yellow cloak patterned with black salamanders. He sits back at ease, his other hand resting on his knee. The back of the throne is yellow-orange, decorated with a black lion and more salamanders, and at his feet, on the grey dais, sits a small live salamander. The sky is pale blue.
Upright
The King leads sitting down: he leans back, and the wand in his hand stands firm. He takes the fire of Wands out into the world, to build, to lead, to set the direction. Natural leadership works like that. People follow such a leader because they can see where the leader is looking. Sometimes it is your own ability to take responsibility for something large and keep your word to a team, a family or yourself.
The King of Wands leads by vision, by naming a goal clearly and lighting others up with it. Waite insisted that the card always signifies honesty: people follow more readily when nobody hides where they’re being led or why. State the direction out loud, own the decision, and don’t waste your fire on petty control. Whoever sees the goal doesn’t need to stand over everyone.
Keywords: leadership, vision, honour, responsibility, charisma
Reversed
The King stops explaining where he’s going. Decisions come down from above, objections are treated as mutiny, and the fire that should inspire starts scorching everything around it. Reversed, the King of Wands is leadership hardened into command: the vision is still there, but it’s no longer shared. Check how long it’s been since you last told people why this is the way to go.
You can see what needs doing and have both the experience and the voice, yet you refuse to lead, afraid of responsibility, of mistakes, of other people’s expectations. The wand stands without an owner, and decisions fall to whoever is loudest. Admit that you already lead, if only yourself, and do it openly, with or without the title of boss.
Keywords: domineering, fear of leading, rigid control, avoiding responsibility, fire without warmth
King of Wands in relationships
In relationships, the King of Wands is a partner who takes the initiative, makes plans, inspires and keeps their word. Life beside them feels secure and interesting, though they need their vision to be shared. Reversed, it points to deciding everything for both of you or, the other way round, to avoiding responsibility for a shared future. Agree on the direction together, and don’t confuse care with control.
King of Wands at work
Naming the goal so clearly that the team needs no daily instructions is the King of Wands’ strength, whether he’s a founder or a manager whose idea people rally around. Assign roles, then leave people free to choose how they get there. Reversed, it warns of micromanagement and a harsh tone that snuff out initiative, or of stepping back just when someone has to make the call for everyone.
King of Wands as advice for the day
Put into one or two sentences where you’re leading your work, your family or your own life for the next stage. Say it out loud to someone it concerns. Then pick one decision you’ve been putting off and make it yourself, without handing it to anyone else.
The card’s lesson
The King of Wands leads through vision and responsibility.
