What the card shows

On the shore, with the sea rolling behind him, stands a young page. He wears a blue beret with a long trailing scarf, a blue tunic printed with pink flowers, pink sleeves and hose, and yellow boots. One hand rests on his hip; the other holds a golden cup, and out of it a small fish has popped its head to look straight at him. He isn’t startled and doesn’t laugh. He studies it with interest, head slightly tilted. The background is a plain grey-beige, with no sky or clouds. Waite called the scene “the pictures of the mind taking form”.

Upright

The Page of Cups is a beginner learning the language of feeling. He tends to arrive with something small and tender: a first shy attraction, young love, an idea that turns up out of nowhere, or a message that moves you, such as a letter, an invitation or good news about someone close. Often the signal is quiet: an odd dream, an image you can’t shake, a hunch that there’s something here.

A fish in a cup is something that shouldn’t be there, and the page studies it with amused interest. Treat intuition and imagination the same way, with curiosity and without analysing straight away. Write the dream down, sketch the idea, answer the warm message, allow yourself the slightly ridiculous new hobby. Creative work and self-knowledge both grow from small surprises like this one.

Reversed

Taking offence over nothing, sulking, expecting others to guess your mood, falling for an image: these are feelings handled the way a child would handle them. An immature feeling slides easily into clingy attachment or a game of seduction with little truth in it. Put emotions into words and own them, because acting them out only makes them louder.

Sometimes the fish ducks back into the cup. The feeling or the idea is real, but it gets talked down: “silly”, “not now”, “what would people think”. Poems stay in a drawer, the idea stays in your notes app, the confession stays unsaid. You needn’t pour everything out. Admitting to yourself that the feeling or the impulse exists, and means something, is already a start.

Page of Cups in relationships

The Page of Cups is a card of first steps in love: an attraction just beginning, a shy confession, a message that keeps you smiling all day. It brings a young kind of romance, whatever your age. Couples can borrow its playfulness: a note, a surprise, a compliment out of the blue. Reversed, it points to bottled-up feelings, touchiness, and expecting your partner to read your mind.

Page of Cups at work

In work and study the Page marks an apprenticeship where sensitivity and imagination count: a first design or counselling course, a first commission, a new role working with people. News can come too, an invitation, warm feedback, an offer to try something unusual. Don’t be shy about your ideas even when they seem naive, and write them down. Reversed, watch for creative block and for taking criticism of your work as a personal wound.

Page of Cups as advice for the day

Today, notice a small feeling you’d usually skip past: a flicker of sadness, sudden tenderness, irritation out of nowhere. Work out what it’s about and write the answer in two or three sentences without correcting them. If an idea or an image flashes up, catch that too. A week later, notes like these read like letters from yourself.
