What the card shows

In the courtyard of an old house, a boy in a red hood and blue tunic bends toward a smaller girl and hands her a cup full of greenery, crowned with a white star-shaped flower. She wears a red headscarf, a speckled dress and one white mitten. Four more cups with the same flowers stand in a row in front of them; the sixth sits on a stone block carved with a shield and a white diagonal cross. Behind them rise a square tower and a house with a grey roof, and on the left a figure with a long staff walks away up the steps.

Upright

Some memories arrive whole: the smell of a school corridor, a song from the summer you were twelve, a photo found at the back of a drawer. The Six of Cups brings that kind of warmth into the present. Think nostalgia, bumping into a childhood friend, a trip back to the town you grew up in, or simple pleasures such as a game, a walk, a present given for no reason. Feeling steadies itself on what once felt safe.

The boy stoops to the girl’s height to hand over his gift. It costs nothing and it’s alive: flowers in a cup. Meanwhile the adult world seems to be leaving the stage, as the figure on the steps climbs away without a backward glance. Let a little of that simplicity back in, with care that isn’t calculated, play without a goal, and delight in small things. Memories like these are a store of warmth to draw on today.

Keywords: nostalgia, childhood, fond memories, simple pleasures, kindness

Reversed

“Things were better then.” “That was real happiness.” “They don’t make people like that any more.” Reversed, the Six shows memory keeping the flowers and dropping everything else, so the past shines brighter than it ever did. Idealising it makes the good things in front of you harder to see and turns every new friendship into a contest with an old one. Remember the whole picture, difficulties included, and pin down what exactly you miss.

Old roles have a strong grip: the child in your parents’ house, the life and soul of a group you knew at twenty, the keeper of a story that ended years ago. Some things, relationships and habits stay only because they come from back then, and that loyalty takes up room the future needs. Memory serves you while it helps you move. Sometimes you revisit the courtyard of childhood in order to finally walk out of it.

Keywords: idealising the past, living in yesterday, outgrown roles, struggling to let go, comparing with before

Six of Cups in relationships

Tenderness and play are what the Six of Cups brings to love: being silly together, a first love remembered fondly, an old acquaintance who suddenly looks different. Reversed, it flags a trap: comparing a partner with an ex, or returning to an old flame out of longing for that time, means loving a memory rather than a person. Couples, though, can take the card as a reminder of how things began, and maybe repeat something from an early date.

Six of Cups at work

Professionally, the card can mean returning to an old project, field or team, mentoring someone new, or work that touches childhood, memory or tradition. Read reversed, it’s the voice saying “we’ve always done it this way”, or missing an old team so much that you never quite join the new one. Upright, lean on earlier experience and on skills you may have let slide, and remember what first drew you to this line of work.

Six of Cups as advice for the day

Take out one good memory today and live it in detail: where you were, who was there, what you could smell and hear. Then make a small gesture in the same spirit: call an old friend, bring someone flowers, play something for no reason. Notice how you come back to the present afterwards, with more strength or with more longing.

The card’s lesson
