What the card shows
Seen from behind as a dark silhouette, a man flings up one hand before a vision: seven golden cups floating on grey clouds, each with something rising out of it. In the top row are a young head with curly hair, a figure shrouded in white and glowing red, and a spotted snake. In the bottom row are a tower on a rock, a heap of jewels trailing a chain, a laurel wreath above a cup painted with a skull, and a blue dragon. The sky is clear blue and there is no ground in sight; it all happens in the air. Waite called them “strange chalices of vision”, with nothing lasting in them.
Upright
A move abroad, a new career, a different partner, fame, riches, peace and quiet: with the Seven of Cups the options multiply and every one of them glitters. Imagination is running ahead of decisions, and any road seems better than the one you’re on. Daydreaming has its uses, since it shows what’s missing. Trouble starts when you pick between pictures and leave the real possibilities untested.
Almost every cup hides a catch. The victor’s wreath rests on a cup marked with a skull, a dragon sits in the same row as the treasure, and the central figure, the one that glows, is wrapped so completely that you can’t tell who it is. A dream with no face is convenient because it never has to be checked. Pick two or three options and bring them down to earth: what the first month would involve, who has walked that road already, what it would cost in time and effort.
Keywords: illusion, daydreaming, too many options, temptation, wishful thinking
Reversed
The clouds start to thin, and after a spell of confusion or wishful thinking the choice grows clearer: one cup turns out to be real, the others lose their shine, and desire hardens into a plan. If you can feel the fog lifting, don’t reopen the whole comparison. Take the option that survived the reality check and make the first move while you can still see clearly.
Another reading takes the reversed Seven the other way, with the clouds thickening. Fantasies multiply and no choice arrives. You read endlessly about other people’s lives, plan ten things and start none, and put off deciding because any decision closes the other doors. If that sounds closer to home, admit that not choosing is a choice too, and rarely a good one.
Keywords: clarity, a real choice, determination, the fog lifting, endless options
Seven of Cups in relationships
Romantically, the Seven of Cups is about projection: falling for the image you’ve built of someone, or weighing up several people without really knowing any of them. Reversed, the haze clears and you finally see what, and whom, you want. Until then, one real evening together is worth a dozen imagined ones, so keep sorting what you know for sure from what your imagination has filled in.
Seven of Cups at work
As a work card the Seven often shows up when there are more plans than hours: ten ideas, three start-ups in your head, a new career every other week. Test the options against reality by talking to people already doing the work, running a small pilot, and estimating how long the plan would really take. Drop the cups that are beautiful and empty. Reversed, the choice comes into focus and it’s time to commit; the only risk left is procrastination dressed up as research.
Seven of Cups as advice for the day
Write down every option you’ve been dreaming about, even the silly ones. Beside each, answer two questions: what first step could I take this week, and what do I know about it for certain rather than by hearsay? Set aside anything with no first step and no facts; for now it’s cloud. From what’s left, choose one and take that step, however small.
The card’s lesson
