What the card shows
A knight in silver armour sits on a horse that has reared up and is straining to the left. An orange-red plume streams from his helmet like flames, and flame-shaped scraps of the same colour burst from beneath his shoulder plates. Over the armour he wears a yellow tunic patterned with black salamanders. In his raised hand is a short wand in leaf; the other hand holds the reins. The horse is a pinkish chestnut with a curly mane and a green patterned breastplate. Below lie desert sand and three yellow pyramids, under a pale blue sky. Waite noted that the knight is on a journey rather than a warlike errand, and that the horse’s movement reveals its rider: “the precipitate mood”.
Upright
If the Page has only just caught fire, the Knight is already in the saddle and racing toward it. He’s the hottest of the Wands court: energy, passion, readiness to act now. His card is the leap, whether a move, a bold decision or a venture you throw yourself into, or someone near you who sweeps others along. Departures, a change of home and long roads often ride with him too.
A rearing horse is magnificent and risky at once: from there you can surge forward or be thrown. Use your fire while it burns, but keep a firm hold on the reins. Courage works best with a course: a clear goal, at least a rough route, and attention to whoever is riding beside you. Then the impulse turns into a journey.
Keywords: passion, bold action, momentum, impulse, adventure
Reversed
The decision is made before it’s thought through, the promise given on a wave of excitement, the project launched without a plan, and now there are consequences to clear up. Haste outruns sense, and impatience wants everything done yesterday. Before the next charge, ask how this step will look a month from now and who else it will matter to.
The horse thrashes in place: one goal today, another tomorrow, strength spent on changing direction. There’s plenty of energy, but it scatters, and the knight ends up circling the desert without getting any closer to a pyramid. Things get dropped halfway and plans break off. Choose one goal and ride at least this stretch to its end.
Keywords: haste, impatience, lost focus, dropped halfway, recklessness
Knight of Wands in relationships
A whirlwind romance, passion from the first meeting, someone who courts boldly and with flair. The Knight can also be your own urge to act: to confess, to invite, to go. Reversed, he brings impatience, flare-ups followed by a chill, or a partner who vanishes as soon as things turn serious. He’s a fine card for a beginning, but a fire needs tending once it’s lit.
Knight of Wands at work
At work the Knight is a doer: quick to start, able to fire up a team, unafraid of new tasks or relocation. A launch, a business trip or a job change suits him, provided there’s a clear goal behind it. Reversed, he warns of missed deadlines, half-finished work and the temptation to walk out slamming the door. So sketch the route before you charge, and consider who else depends on your decision.
Knight of Wands as advice for the day
Before you bolt today, pause for three breaths. Write down where you’re racing, why, and what changes for other people if you ride off right now. If the answer is clear, act without waiting for anyone’s permission. If it isn’t, hold the charge and find the missing piece first: a goal, a route or an ally.
The card’s lesson
The Knight of Wands acts boldly but needs a course to follow.
